Reducing single-use plastic products has been a priority for many countries, including Mexico. Our country has become one of the nations that has worked the most on PET recycling issues and is currently positioned as the leading country on the American continent in terms of the percentage that is collected and recycled. Waste management in America; Mexico is a leader In 2017 alone, 768 thousand tons of PET resin were generated for consumer products and a stockpile of 445 thousand tons of bottles of this material was reported, which means a figure close to 56%. In Brazil, 42% of PET is recycled; in Canada, 40%, and in the United States, only 31%. For this reason, Mexico has a similar level of recycling of bottles of this material, compared to the average of the countries that make up the European Union where 6 out of every 10 containers end up in this process. They also explained that 1,643 open-air dumps operate in the country, which are sources of pollution, in which waste is deposited, including non-recyclable waste that can be converted into energy. Of the 44 million tons of garbage that are generated, there are 30 thousand non-recyclable waste that have a calorific value measured in economic resources of 12 billion pesos. The same ones that we are Nepal WhatsApp Number burying and that are literally thrown away because they are not processed in incinerators like those used by the cement industry. Plastic bottles in Mexico and the world According to UN estimates, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute in the world, which is enough to fill the Azteca Stadium in less than a day. In this sense, it is necessary to implement actions that promote a circular economy model that is based on adequate waste management such as PET. The UN recognizes that governments need to promote policies that push towards eco-design and circular economy models, and that they will need to work with the private sector in order to find environmentally friendly alternatives. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), in Mexico a little more than 100 million tons of urban solid waste are collected on average per day, which means that each inhabitant of the country generates about 860 grams of garbage daily. Only 5.1% of this waste corresponds to plastic containers and packaging, but in this area the possibility of promoting the circular economy has been found, specifically with PET. Jesús Lucatero, deputy director of corporate sustainability for Coca-Cola Mexico, told Animal Político : “the importance of the circular economy lies in the fact that it aims to avoid the generation of waste. The objective is to reincorporate the materials for the manufacture of new products, whether the same or others, but always with the intention of saving original resources and having them used an indeterminate number of times. In the circular economy you turn these waste into resources through recycling and reuse." Mexico has the ability to transform waste and use it in various ways, particularly with PET, which is recycled to convert used bottles into products ready to return to the market.
