Jaguar Land Rover has developed an innovative process that allows it to recycle old aluminum cans, bottle caps and end-of-life vehicles into new and premium cars, in a move it estimates could reduce CO2 emissions from their manufacturing in more than a quarter. Co-funded by government innovation agency Innovate UK, the process was developed in partnership with Brunel University as part of a £2 million project called 'REALITY', the British carmaker announced on Friday. Engineers mixed pieces of recycled aluminum with a reduced amount of primary aluminum to form a new alloy prototype, which they said matches the quality of materials the company currently uses in automobile manufacturing. The project involved establishing a system for the recovery of automotive-grade aluminum used to manufacture its products, the firm explained. Vehicle scrap is usually exported abroad, but the project relied on new separation technology to recycle material from old cars so it could be mixed with aluminum scrap, thus reducing the need for virgin aluminum.
